TORONTO - For Toronto Black Film Festival founder Fabienne Colas, this year s edition feels like it s happening in a different era.
Running now through Sunday online across Canada, the ninth annual movie marathon comes amid Black History Month, the first one in this country since the Black Lives Matter movement of last summer raised global awareness of racial injustice.
We feel a different vibe, Colas says. We feel like people are looking for impact and purpose and meaning in what they decide to support. ....

Film festivals have moved online en masse in 2020 and 2021, cancelling large public gatherings while still allowing film fans to get their fix. This year’s Toronto Black Film Festival is no different, though its 2020 edition had the distinction of being one of the last big fests to take place before COVID-19 took hold.
“We were so fortunate,” says Fabienne Colas, founder and director of the festival, whose eighth edition ran last year from Feb. 12 through Feb. 17. “We were welcoming Spike Lee, we were all fired up, it was a full house. There was no social distancing.” ....
