Experts are celebrating the start of Quebec’s COVID-19 vaccination campaign, but they also warn that the benefits of the vaccine won’t be apparent for some time. “I think we should be ecstatic,” said Dr. Donald Sheppard, chair of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology in McGill’s Faculty of Medicine. “I think it is very clear that the only exit strategy for us to get back to normal life will be vaccination,” he said. “It’s the only way we’re going to protect the vulnerable people in our community, the elderly and those with chronic medical conditions.” But the first inoculations are unlikely to have any immediate effect on the number of hospitalizations and deaths. ....

Genevieve has had an incredibly difficult life. She grew up in a household with abuse and kept the trauma of her upbringing bottled up for years. By the time she was a student at CEGEP, she was using drugs to cope. Eventually, she became hooked on heroin.
After that, she endured several lost years in and out of prison. She said rehab and counselling just couldn’t get through to her. It was finding out she was pregnant, while in prison, that finally convinced her to get clean and turn her life around. She praises the innovative Mère-Enfant program at Portage, a drug rehab residence specifically for pregnant mothers, with helping her shake her addictions. ....

That seems to be the most appropriate response to broadcaster Aaron Rand and fans of the satirical “bonjour-hi” T-shirt he created. The popular CJAD host presented a cheque for $8,655 to the Montreal Gazette Christmas Fund Thursday proceeds from the sale of the shirts this fall.

Marie-Ève loved having her first child. When she accidentally became pregnant with her second late last year, right away she knew she wanted to have another, even though she knew the father wouldn’t be in the picture.
She said it’s not easy balancing being a single mother with whatever life throws her way, including having a child in the middle of a pandemic. The road to getting her kids back was a long, difficult one. A few years back, Brandy said she became “overwhelmed” and couldn’t handle parenting after one of her children had a behavourial issue. Legal issues ensued and at her lowest point, she lost custody of her three children, now ages 14, 13 and four. Having her kids taken away was all the motivation she needed to get back on track. She said the long road to recovery was a matter of being consistent every day, talking out her issues and staying focused on ....
