Study: Brexit was 'historic debacle' in which the UK failed to protect its interests

LAWRENCE Ever since the United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union in 2016’s Brexit referendum, debates have raged on whether it was the right decision and how the U.K. would separate itself. A new study from a University of Kansas international trade law expert argues that, regardless of what one feels of the decision, its implementation has been “a historic debacle.”
Raj Bhala, Brenneisen Distinguished Professor of Law at KU, said the United Kingdom has failed to protect its economic, political, strategic and legal interests and that those failures in execution were compounded.
“These four failures were prompted by a fifth fiasco, namely, the U.K. dimming its status as a multicultural beacon for global human capital talent in its effort to control immigration,” Bhala wrote in the study, published in the Manchester Journal of International Economic Law. ....

As you may have heard by now, I am bringing back to local ownership the 180-year-old Bennington Banner, the 160-year-old Manchester Journal and the 145-year-old Brattleboro Reformer.
I learned about Brattleboro and, for that matter, about Vermont, by reading the Reformer, the Banner and the Journal and made my investment decision based on the quality of the journalism I found in the publications.
I decided to invest in southern Vermont because I believe the Green Mountain State embodies all the things that make the American Dream so attractive to people around the world â grit, determination, self-reliance, stoicism and creativity. But, most importantly, I moved here because of the community â people who support each other through thick and thin, who rise to challenges unheard of 30 years ago when I first arrived on these shores. ....

Over the past half-dozen years, there have been countless news stories about systemic racism in America followed by discussions on diversity, unity and inclusiveness. Paralleling this media is several wanton killings of Black Americans by law-enforcement officials.
Folks of my generation, born in the 1930s, â40s, and early â50s, have a difficult time understanding the former, but not in the least, the latter. We had lived through decades of outright segregation, discrimination, and open hostility to all who were not white.
On a personal note, growing up outside the Bronx, I did not encounter discrimination, not to say it did not exist in Westchester County. It certainly did but was more subtle. It wasnât until my time in the Marines and working for an international CPA firm that outright forms of segregation and discrimination came into full view. ....
