In January 1848, six Mormon men bunked together in a small wood
cabin along the South Fork of the American River in Cullumah, as
the Nisenan named the land where they had lived for thousands of
years, meaning “beautiful valley.”
The men, part of the U.S. Army Mormon
Battalion, had traveled from Iowa to San Diego to fight in the
Mexican-American War, which, fortuitously or not, was close to an
end upon their arrival. The war allowed the victorious United
States to acquire more than 500,000 square miles of Mexican
territory from the Rio Grande to the Pacific Ocean. Undeterred,
the men headed north to become laborers at John Sutter’s sawmill ....

Take a hike: Wild & Scenic Film Festival goes online this year, promotes local hikes

Day hikers take to the Deer Creek Tribute Trail bridge that spans Deer Creek Canyon, west of Nevada City, over the weekend. The pathway is one of a handful of local trails touted by the Wild & Scenic Film Festival, which has gone online this year.

This year the 19th annual Wild & Scenic Film Festival is taking its presence fully online, but that doesn’t mean people aren’t being encouraged to get out and enjoy the great outdoors.
In fact, with the help of the Wild & Scenic Film Festival website, a virtual experience can be had that includes virtual tour audio and images that can be referenced while walking area trails. ....

Advocate hopes films will help preserve Bear River

Local film maker Jeff Litton stands next to the Bear River at the Highway 174 bridge. Litton has made a handful of films focusing on education and awareness of the river that would be dammed if the Centennial project is realized.

Jeff Litton is a man on a mission.
Litton, a third-generation Nevada County resident, has made several films over the last few years that highlight the Bear River and efforts to preserve it from being dammed by the Centennial Reservoir project.
“I grew up celebrating the beauty of all the great resources around us, and that included the Bear,” Litton said. “In the Boy Scouts, I learned to whitewater kayak the very stretch of the Bear River that would be flooded” by the Centennial Dam. “So I know a little bit about what’s at stake.” ....
