Manning and Dymphna Clark Collection

Manning Clark had a long association with the Library and much of his research for
A History of Australia was carried out in the Library. In the final volume he wrote, ‘The Petherick Room, the Manuscripts Room, and the Newspaper Room are present in every page of this volume, just as they are always present in my heart’. In 1989 he donated the first instalment of his papers under the Taxation Incentives for the Arts Scheme. Further papers were transferred in 1990–91. He bequeathed his remaining papers to the Library and they were received in 1994–95.
The photographs of Manning Clark and his family were lent for copying by Dymphna Clark in 1995. The papers of Dymphna Clark were donated by her son Sebastian Clark in 2003. ....

The Age brings back Age Book of the Year Awards and partners with Melbourne Writers Festival

The Age is sponsoring the Melbourne Writers Festival and reviving the
Age Book of the Year award, which was last presented in 2012.
The agreement with MWF, which is back with a physical festival after last year’s was forced to migrate online, has the newspaper committed to a major partnership deal and it will present its prestigious award on opening night, September 3.
Artistic director of Melbourne Writers Festival Michaela McGuire says the festival’s partnership with The Age makes complete sense.

Grant questions 'fuzzy' idea of reconciliation

The acclaimed journalist and indigenous rights activist argues that Australia has never fully dealt with the “fundamental fact of the invasion” and the dispossession of Aboriginal people.
Grant has called into question the concept of reconciliation itself suggesting that it is not clearly defined.
“We talk about reconciliation, but what is that? It’s this fuzzy concept that has no real political meaning at all,” Grant said.
“There is no fundamental acknowledgment of the sovereignty of first nations’ people and there is no acknowledgement of the truth of our history. ....

Man of history
“Australia’s best known historian, Professor Manning Clark, died yesterday afternoon at his home in Canberra. Professor Clark, 76, suffered a series of illnesses over the past few years which left him very frail. However, he was [still] a familiar sight around Canberra where he would take regular walks from his home … inevitably wearing the broad-brimmed felt hat that had become his trademark in recent years.”
