Fish treadmills, earthquake-proof gingerbread houses? Not so fast

PolitiFact s ruling: Mostly False Here s why: Josh Mandel, an Ohio politician who describes himself as the first statewide Ohio official to support former President Donald Trump, voiced concern over government waste. The federal government spent over $500k trying to force fish to exercise on treadmills, an additional $150k to see if gingerbread houses are earthquake proof, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg, Mandel tweeted May 21. Wasteful spending is robbing America’s future, it must be exposed and stopped! Mandel’s warnings come a bit late. Former Arizona Republican Sen. Jeff Flake listed them in his 2017 Wastebook.  The fish project, funded with $560,536 from the National Science Foundation, took place at the University of California-San Diego Scripps Institution of Oceanography. States With the Biggest Native American Populations By Ellen Dewitt, Stacker News On 1/16/21 at 9:00 AM EST Autumn s Memories / Shutterstock More than 5 million Native Americans live in the United States as members of 574 federally recognized and 63 state-recognized tribes. A federally recognized tribe is a sovereign entity with a government-to-government relationship with the United States, as well as the rights of self-governance in such areas as tribal law and taxation. An estimated 78 percent of Native Americans do not live on reservations. But there are about 326, comprising roughly 56.2 million acres. The 16 million-acre Navajo Nation Reservation in Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah is the largest, and the 1.32-acre Pit River Tribe cemetery in California is the smallest.

Policy Brief: To Lessen Hardship, States Should Invest More TANF Dollars in Basic Assistance for Families

To Lessen Hardship, States Should Invest More TANF Dollars in Basic Assistance for Families

February 2, 2021 States spend only about a fifth of their combined federal and state dollars under the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) block grant on basic assistance for families with children, our analysis of the latest data from fiscal year 2019 shows, and several states spend less than a tenth. States are using their considerable flexibility under TANF, the primary cash assistance program for families with the lowest incomes, to divert funds away from income support for families and toward other, often unrelated state budget areas, as they have increasingly done since TANF’s creation in 1996. By changing course and redirecting the funds back towards cash assistance, states could improve academic, health, and economic outcomes for children in families in poverty, research shows.
