Sugar: a killer crop?

First published 15 March 2021
We know too much sugar is bad for our bodies, but it could be making nature sick, too.
The delicious, sweet powder currently poses two major threats to our health and happiness. First, eating too much sugar contributes to the development of some of the world s biggest killers, including heart disease and diabetes.
Second, sugar cane farming is big business, and it has devastated parts of the natural world. It takes up more than 60 million acres of land worldwide - more than 150 times the area of Greater London. It s often grown in areas where lush tropical forest once stood. ....

Brazil is growing its biofuel industry

Brazil already has the largest fleet of cars driven by ethanol, mainly from sugarcane; now corn-based ethanol plants are on the rise. The ethanol produced by sugarcane and corn has have the potential to reduce up to 90% of the greenhouse gases. And, as mentioned in our recent blog, the country’s diesel fuel will soon have an additional one percent of biofuel (13% compared to current levels of 12%). This is mainly produced by soy oil.
The carbon footprint these biofuels leave will be a business opportunity to exchange carbon credits with different industries.
Many power plants produce sugar cane ethanol, and in between harvests, use the plant to produce corn ethanol to maximize capacity. These are called flex plants. However, there is a wave of corn ethanol plants rapidly growing in Brazil, similar to the corn belt in the early 2000’s. They are mainly located in the center west of Brazil where the biggest corn producers are located. That was a very good opportunity for ....

LONDON
.- Juxtaposing organic and geometric forms, Zerbini’s paintings explore the relationship between colour, light and movement. Inspired by the Amazon and Mata Atlântica rainforests, the exhibition reflects the artist’s ongoing interest in the relationship between nature and humanity in and around Rio de Janeiro. The presentation is available to view online from Monday 25 January and will open to the public as soon as government guidance allows.
Across his career, which spans over three decades, Zerbini has developed a complex visual vocabulary at the intersection of figuration and abstraction. He first emerged within the generational (and global) ‘return to painting’ of the 1980s, centred in Rio de Janeiro around the Parque Lage School of Visual Art ....

Location: Brazil & UK
As a Brazilian expat living in London, quarantine has made it especially hard being away from family and friends. I wanted to do a tribute to my home country and that s how Sol was born.
Sol, which translates to sun”, is a concept coffee brand inspired by the diverse colours and flavours of Brazil. The wordmark takes inspiration from the sinuous shapes of its natural and urban landscapes, followed by a custom bold display typeface.
Sol’s flavours are inspired by the 6 regions of Brazil – Amazônia, Pantanal, Cerrado, Mata Atlântica, Caatinga & Pampa – and their native fauna, flora and ingredients. With an expanded colour palette that is a modern interpretation of the flag s green, yellow and blue, all elements come together on the packaging, keeping the wordmark centred as a source of life and growth. ....
