Remarkable story of Angus war horse uncovered after more than a century

It is a remarkable story, stretching from the arable calm of the Angus coast to the brutal desolation of the Somme, and home again.
And for the first time, the inspiring tale of a chestnut mare and the decorated Army officer who shared four years on the battlefields of France and Flanders with her has been fully revealed as the true-life background to Angus’s own War Horse.
Little known for more than a century, the story of Captain Alexander Wallace MC and the distinctive mount, Vic, is now the centrepiece of a new exhibition at Montrose Air Station Heritage Centre (MASHC). ....

LARGE crowds gathered as an aeronaut ascended in a hydrogen balloon from the garden of George Heriot’s School in Edinburgh on October 5, 1785.
Italian Vincenzo Lunardi flew over the Firth of Forth and landed at Coaltown of Callange in the Parish of Ceres, in Fife, and had travelled 46 miles. A commemorative plaque marks the site to this day.
In a report from the time by Scots Magazine, it said: “The beauty and grandeur of the spectacle could only be exceeded by the cool, intrepid manner in which the adventurer conducted himself; and indeed he seemed infinitely more at ease than the greater part of his spectators.” ....

Montrose Air Station welcomed a film crew ahead for a shoot combining fact and fiction ahead of the Angus attraction’s planned re-opening to visitors later this month.
The Broomfield base – site of Britain’s first operational military air station – was the setting for scenes around the short film, Otto, being created by Mearns filmmaker JJ Mcgechan.
JJ Mcgechan is creating the film, Otto, through his Talisman Media operation. ....
