All of the 39 people who died in fires across Massachusetts last year were adults, marking the first year on record that no children died in fires.State Fire Marshal Peter Ostroskey also reported that half of the fire deaths recorded last year.

Ostroskey credited the Student Awareness of Fire Education Program with helping to teach fire safety to children. This milestone speaks to the hard work of firefighter-educators to teach children what to do to save themselves in a fire. Through the 26 years of the Student Awareness of Fire Education Program (S.AF.E.), firefighters and classroom teachers have been helping to raise a fire safe generation of children.â
Historically, children and seniors have been most at risk of dying in fires, according to the release. Saugus Fire Chief Michael C. Newbury, president of the Fire Chiefsâ Association of Massachusetts, credited the milestone to outreach work that firefighters have done with children about how to save themselves during a fire.
