Opinion: An ASB President's Farewell Address – The Daily Mississippian

2 min read
What has fascinated me the most about Ole Miss is the sheer amount of variety in our student experience. As Associated Student Body President, I have had the privilege to witness everything from the innovation of organizations like the Student Activities Association and the United Nations Children’s Fund, to the unwavering resilience of the Ole Miss Vietnamese American Student Association and the Black Student Union. I’ve heard the complaints, the successes, the failures and the
humanity of much of the student body, all of which I can’t truly do justice in 400 words.
These are the aspects of UM that I have come to love the most and that I will miss dearly. This campus is bursting at the seams with some of the most authentic and compassionate people in the world. If I am able to make one last request for anyone willing to listen, it would be this: an increased focus on fellowship. ....

Class of 2021 seniors express mixed emotions over their graduation

2 min read
As the class of 2021 at the University of Mississippi trades their school clothes for a cap and gown this week for graduation, the seniors are having mixed feelings over their graduation and the extenuating circumstances regarding it.
In adherence to the safety measures of the university, this year’s graduation will be divided by academic school, location, varying sessions and time slots. The ceremony – limited to a small number of family and friends – will also require each person in attendance to respect social distancing boundaries and wear a face mask.
Seniors Ariel Riley and Austin Newcomb are among the thousands of students preparing to begin their journey outside of the University.  ....

Mental Health Week spreads suicide prevention awareness on campus

4 min read
Student mental health organization Active Minds facilitated its annual Mental Health Week to spread awareness about mental health and suicide prevention on a campus affected by this year’s severe decline in mental health among young people. Studies have linked the national decline in mental health to the COVID-19 pandemic, and Oxford specifically has seen an increased number of suicide attempts this year.
Active Minds partnered with other campus organizations to hold a de-stressing or informational event each day of the week. On Monday, the group teamed up with the William Magee Center and Mr. and Miss Ole Miss, Cade Slaughter and Lilli Gordon, for #UMListens, an event meant to create a safe space for students to conversate about mental health on campus.  ....

Editorial: Feedback on Dean of Students section of University's Draft Anti-Racism Plan

In light of the Nov. 10 release of the University’s Draft Anti-Racism Plan, the Justice’s editorial board will be reviewing and providing feedback on prominent sections. We hope that these forthcoming editorials will serve as a resource for students to provide feedback to the administration. We also recognize, however, that our editorial board is predominantly composed of white students, and we will work to ensure that we are not taking space or attention away from the voices of the BIPOC students who are most directly affected by racism on campus. In line with this goal, we have grounded our analysis of the appendices in the demands put forward by the Black Action Plan.
This editorial will focus on Appendix O: Dean of Students Office.
Appendix O is organized into four subheadings Student Activities, Student Rights & Community Standards, Care Team and Department of Community Service along with an introductory section explaining the DOSO’s “actions st ....
