Putting shoes on the feet of children in need

Benjamin McQueen-Davies, of Share a Pair NZ, organises the shoes ready for people to grab.
People lined up before the shoes arrived, waiting outside the closed doors for their chance to nab some shoes.
Benjamin McQueen-Davies, 16, who runs the charity, said it was inspired four years ago by his mother Tania McQueen-Davies, who teaches at a low-decile school in Pahiatua.
Children would turn up with no shoes, or shoes with big holes and worn-out soles.
She saw there was a need, and would bring shoes in for them to wear.
“It’s not something any kid should go through,” Benjamin said. ....

Last year, more than 61 recipients received lifechanging
grants totalling more than $160,000 from the Mazda
Foundation.
Among these was the Sailability Northland
Trust which received $1,600 to purchase boat covers so its
two specialised yachts stay in pristine condition.
The
Mazda Foundation was established in 2004 and is funded
through a contribution from the sale of every new Mazda in
New Zealand.
Founded in 2011, the Sailability
Northland Trust provides opportunities for physically
disabled young people and adults to learn to sail or just
experience being on a sailing boat through tuition and its
‘Have a Go’ days.

Bracken's Kitchen Tackles the Pandemic-Induced Surge in Food Insecurity

Bracken’s Kitchen has had its busiest year since it was founded in 2013. As O.C. residents faced unemployment and other financial challenges because of the pandemic, the kitchen ramped up its food production more than threefold, working with agencies to distribute meals to the hungry. By mid-June, the kitchen had surpassed its anticipated goal of preparing 600,000 meals this year. Founder and chef Bill Bracken says that at the beginning of stay-at-home orders, the biggest challenge was managing excess food waste coming in from local restaurants. But the organization pushed through. “We have several shelters that get meals from us, seven days a week, for lunch and dinner,” Bracken says. “If we close our kitchens, what would happen to them?” ....
