Southeast Idaho ready to vaccinate 12-15 year-olds Heather Hazzan : SELF Magazine : CC BY 2.0 POCATELLO, Idaho (KIFI) - Following the Food and Drug Administration’s authorization of Pfizer/BioNTech s COVID-19 vaccine for 12-to-15-year-olds, Southeastern Idaho Public Health Director Maggie Mann announced southeast Idaho is ready to begin vaccinating this age group. “This is an extraordinary development on our path back to normalcy we now have more Idaho residents eligible to roll up their sleeves to protect themselves and others from this deadly disease,” Mann said. “We have been planning and preparing for this moment and are ready to begin vaccinating teens 12 and older. Start making your plan, southeast Idaho let’s get our kids their shot as soon as possible so they are fully vaccinated and protected in time for a fun, safe summer.” ....

More than 540,000 people in Idaho are fully vaccinated, making up about 38.5% of the state’s 16 and older population but only 29% of the entire state population. But the Gem State still isn t keeping up with the rest of the country. Idaho ranks 44th in the nation for COVID-19 vaccination rates, according to the Becker Hospital Review, which is tracking vaccination rates by total state population. Listen • 1:13 More than one million COVID-19 vaccine doses have been given out in Idaho and nearly half a million people in the state are fully vaccinated. It’s been one month since Idaho Gov. Brad Little opened up vaccine appointments to anyone 16 and older. That week, Idaho administered 95,000 doses the most out of any week in the vaccine effort thus far. But in the weeks since, the vaccine rollout has started to slow down, as fewer people sign up to get shots. Idaho is on par with the national picture when it comes to the vaccination rate of seniors. Seventy percent of those 65 and older have been fully vaccinated, and Idaho wants 80% of seniors to be fully vaccinated by June 1. Experts have said that’s around the percentage of the total population that has to be fully vaccinated to reach “herd immunity,” though state health officials say the concept is a moving target, especially as new variants change the way the virus spreads. ....
Pocatello Mayor receives 2nd dose of COVID-19 vaccine POCATELLO, Idaho (KIFI) - Pocatello Mayor Brian Blad received his second dose of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine at Southeastern Idaho Public Health’s offices Tuesday. “The quickest way we get back to normal is for as many people as possible to get vaccinated against COVID-19,” Mayor Blad said. “I didn’t have any side effects from my first dose but if you are concerned about getting a vaccine, please talk to your health care provider.” He received his first dose March 30. “It is very important to get both shots in a two-dose series to achieve maximum protection,” Southeastern Idaho Public Health District Director Maggie Mann said. “Also, it takes your body’s immune system time to respond to the vaccine. People are not considered ‘fully vaccinated’ until two weeks after their second dose.” ....
SIPH advises providers to follow federal pause of Johnson and Johnson vaccine KIFI Southeastern Idaho Public Health POCATELLO, Idaho (KIFI) - Southeastern Idaho Public Health is advising health care providers around the area to follow the federal recommendation to pause use of the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine. SIPH will wait on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to review data about an extremely rare type of blood clot that has been reported in six people who received that vaccine in the United States. All six cases occurred among women between the ages of 18 and 48, and symptoms occurred six to 13 days after vaccination. ....
