Man arrested for fatal hit-and-run of University of Florida freshman on W University Ave. Joseph Erickson Updated 9:17 PM Gainesville Police have arrested a man they say was driving the car that hit and killed UF freshman Maggie Paxton in December 2020. Police arrested 31-year old Joshua Figueroa after a months-long investigation. Police say they now have evidence to prove he was driving the car that killed Maggie Paxton, and drove away. “He did not stop to render aid, did not stop to provide personal or vehicle information as required by Florida state statute,” said GPD Spokesman Graham Glover. Nearly a year after three deadly accidents took place on West University Avenue, the city of Gainesville is working with UF and the Florida Department of Transportation to address traffic safety near campus. The man who died in a one-vehicle crash and fire early Saturday on West University Avenue was identified Monday. GPD spokesman Graham Glover said Monday the driver was identified as George Harry Eckhardt, 51. He could not confirm where Eckhardt lived. Around 2:14 a.m., a vehicle heading west at a fast speed hit a raised median near the 3200 block of University. It then went south, crashing into a wall approximately 4 feet high before ultimately wrapping around a traffic signal pole, according to a GPD press release. The vehicle immediately caught on fire, and Eckhardt the vehicle s only occupant was killed as a result, it states. ....
