PW Special Report: After Conservative Criticism, UNC Backs Down From Offering Acclaimed Journalist Tenured Position

Journalism school will instead offer Nikole Hannah-Jones a fixed five-year contract
In her career in journalism, Nikole Hannah-Jones has been awarded the Pulitzer Prize and a MacArthur Fellowship “Genius Grant.” But despite support from the UNC-Chapel Hill chancellor and faculty, she won’t be getting a tenured teaching position at her alma mater. At least not yet.
As Policy Watch reported last week, UNC-Chapel Hill’s Hussman School of Journalism and Media pursued Hannah-Jones for its Knight Chair in Race and Investigative Journalism, a tenured professorship. But following political pressure from conservatives who object to her work on “The 1619 Project” for  ....

UNC Chapel Hill board doesn't approve tenure for noted journalist

The New York Times’
“1619 Project,” earned her master’s degree in journalism from Chapel Hill in 2003. The university’s April announcement called her “one of the country’s leading voices in journalism covering housing and school segregation, civil rights and racial injustice in the U.S.” Susan King, dean of journalism at Chapel Hill, was quoted as saying, “This is the story of a leader returning to a place that transformed her life and career trajectory.”
Not even a month later, King told
NC Policy Watch that the university’s trustees had declined to take action on approving Hannah-Jones’s tenure. That’s despite the fact that Hannah-Jones’s case was approved by faculty committees and university administrators and was, in King s retelling, as well reviewed as any she’d ever seen. ....

UNC Denies Tenure for '1619 Project' Creator Nikole Hannah-Jones

The 1619 Project, has lost her alma mater’s offer for tenure and is instead under consideration for a fixed five-year contract as a professor of practice.
NC Policy Watch reported on the change Wednesday amid a wave of conservative criticism of her work.
Hannah-Jones was recruited for the Knight Chair in Race and Investigative Journalism which, at the UNC-Chapel Hill campus, is typically a tenured position. In layman’s terms, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author would have a guaranteed position with the role. However, the former UNC student was offered by the university a non-tenured professorship after going through an extensive approval process. ....

1619 Project Creator Has Tenure Offer Revoked by UNC: Report

Last month, the university offered Hannah-Jones a position as the Knight Chair in Race and Investigative Journalism.
However, after Hannah-Jones went through an extensive tenure process with the backing of faculty and the tenure committee, her application hit a roadblock with the UNC-Chapel Hill Board of Trustees, according to NC Policy Watch.
The board of trustees is tasked with reviewing and approving tenure applications, and it declined to move forward with authorizing tenure for Hannah-Jones, who earned a master s degree in journalism and mass communications from the university.
Instead, the school has altered its offer from a tenured position to a fixed-term position, which would afford her the chance to be considered for tenure after five years. ....

[DEMOCRAT DIVISIONS] U.S. House Democrats offer resolution blocking $735 million Israel weapons sale

Conservative Cancel Culture
But America and conservatives have a tough time dealing with the truth and as such Nikole Hannah-Jones, famed journalist of
The 1619 Project, Pulitzer Prize winner and a MacArthur Fellowship “Genius Grant” recipient, will no longer be given a tenured position at her alma mater UNC-Chapel Hill because conservatives don’t love her.
See, UNC-Chapel Hill’s Hussman School of Journalism and Media pursued Hannah-Jones for its Knight Chair in Race and Investigative Journalism, a tenured position, but after conservatives (read white people) took issue with the offer, UNC remembered that it was in the South and pulled its Confederate flag undies back up. ....
