Parkinson’s Healthy Living Program comes to the Scholar’s Academy The Parkinson’s Healthy Living Program was brought to the Scholar’s Academy at the University of Calgary by program lead Adam Retsinas as a community service project. Retsinas has a long history of working with vulnerable geriatric populations through long-term care and assisted living facilities in Ontario and Alberta which sparked his interest in developing a seminar-based program for individuals living with Parkinson’s disease. The loss of language has become increasingly concerning as the world has undergone globalization and become more connected than ever before. On Jan. 29, Julie Sedivy, along with several other speakers, shared their stories about struggling to hang on to their mother languages after moving to Canada and how they are seeking to create space in society for the inclusion of different languages in a webinar titled Irreplaceable Languages: Losing and Reclaiming our Mother Tongues. ....
UCalgary Hippocampus research spurred by New Frontiers of Researchers funding Neuroscience has come a long way from its rudimentary origins in cutting out parts of the brain as treatment for various illnesses and afflictions. Today, University of Calgary’s own Dr. Wilten Nicola is working with Dr. David Dupret at the University of Oxford to utilize in silico and in vivo techniques to better understand the hippocampus and its function. Theirs is one of three UCalgary projects to receive the New Frontiers of Researchers funding, a fund that was started by the Government of Canada to spur innovation and encourage collaboration between different fields. ....
