Wildlife officials: Wyoming still free of invasive mussels | Big Horn Radio Network

Written by Associated Press on June 2, 2021
CASPER, Wyo. (AP) Wildlife officials believe Wyoming remains free of invasive zebra mussels three months after the mollusks turned up in aquarium products shipped into the state.
The Wyoming Game and Fish Department and state Department of Agriculture have been using DNA testing to monitor sewer systems for zebra mussels and the similarly invasive quagga mussel.
“If we get a positive on a wastewater facility, it would mean we would ramp up monitoring at that facility,” state fisheries chief Alan Osterland told the Casper Star-Tribune.
The species have overpopulated waters in other states, clogging water systems and destroying native wildlife habitat. Wyoming is among just a handful of states still free of the mussels native to Eurasia and introduced to the U.S. in ship ballast in the 1980s. ....

Georgia boat owner finds invasive mussels on Tennessee boat
April 22, 2021 GMT
SOCIAL CIRCLE, Ga. (AP) Georgia officials who are trying to keep zebra mussels out of Lake Lanier and other bodies of water say a boat owner recently spotted the invasive mussels in a boat purchased from a Tennessee resident.
Georgia Department of Natural Resources spokesperson Melissa Cummings said the new owner was cleaning the boat and never launched it into the big reservoir north of Atlanta before finding the mussels and calling the Wildlife Resources Division.
State employees removed about a gallon of dead mussels and helped the new owners to make sure the boat was drained, cleaned and dried before launching it into Lake Lanier. ....

AZoCleantech speaks with Dr. Alper Bozkurt and Dr. Jay Levine from North Carolina State University. The pair teamed up to develop a system that monitors the movement of mussels. The opening and closing of bivalve mollusks can indicate toxins in aquatic environments.
Can you give our readers a summary of your recent research?
We demonstrated that attaching an array of accelerometers (the step counting sensor in Fitbits and other wearables) to the shells of freshwater mussels provides us with enough resolution to measure their shell opening and gaping behavior. We connect these sensors to wireless networks to monitor a group of mussels simultaneously.   ....
