Since the pandemic took hold in the United States, many churches have had to innovate and find new ways to serve their congregations. While some have adopted new technology, the process hasn t been simple. But religious leaders say some of the new takes on age-old traditions will remain long after the threat has passed. For Kevin Cooper, the view from the pulpit at Grace Crossing Baptist Church in Canton, Mississippi, looks different than it did a year ago. Physical attendance has dropped nearly by half and that s on a good Sunday. After being closed for nearly two months in 2020, the church was able to reopen its doors to socially-distanced assigned seating in May. By June, the church was operating almost like it used to but now with face masks, disinfecting fog machines and deep cleanings after every service. Members who are most at risk of complications from the virus people 65 and older make up nearly 50% of the country s weekly church-attending population, according to a study from the Pew Research Center are still at home, choosing to worship through smartphones and computers thanks to the church s livestream. ....
