Reporter Jasmine Demers' Fave Five of 2020


Jasmine Demers is a government reporter with the Star.
It seems so strange to have to pick my favorite stories from a year where much of my work has been defined by the COVID-19 pandemic and the suffering that came along with it, she says. For that reason, I decided to pick stories that I feel really highlight the widespread impact that this virus has had, and continues to have, on our community.

One of my favorite things about being a journalist is being able to connect with people and having the honor of telling their stories. This was one of the most difficult stories I’ve ever had to write, but I was so grateful that this family trusted me enough to do so during such an incredibly sad and vulnerable time for them. Some Pima County employees told to stay home for three weeks to stop COVID-19 spike


Many Pima County employees will have to use leave or be put on furlough for the next three weeks as part of an effort to reduce the transmission of COVID-19 within county departments.
Starting Monday, Dec. 21, about 20% of the county’s 7,000 employees will be under a stay-at-home order through Jan. 10, according to County Administrator Chuck Huckelberry.
Pima County has reported more than 320 cases of COVID-19 among employees since the pandemic began in February. More than 60 of those cases have occurred in the last two weeks.

Pima County's health director tests positive for COVID-19


Pima County’s public-health director Dr. Theresa Cullen tested positive for COVID-19 on Tuesday due to an apparent virus outbreak among Health Department employees.
A total of 11 department employees at the headquarters building on East Ajo Way have tested positive for the virus in the past week. Anyone who had close contact with the positive employees were advised to isolate for 10 days and get tested. All employees of the building are being offered testing and will be moved to alternative work locations or will work from home while the affected floors are sanitized.
Vice President Mike Pence says he looks forward in the days ahead to receiving a vaccine for COVID-19 and will do so without hesitation. ....
