Environmental groups to sue DEP, Port Manatee for Piney Point incident


Local conservation groups have notified the state, Manatee County Port Authority and HRK Holdings of a lawsuit that they plan to file in the coming weeks over the wastewater breach in April at the former Piney Point fertilizer plant.
The lawsuit seeks to shed light on the involvement that the Florida Department of Environmental Protection had in decisions leading to two emergency situations at the former fertilizer facility during the past decade. 
The DEP and the state have basically just been pointing the finger at HRK and saying we are going to bring all our resources to hold them accountable, but I think they need to be introspective, said Justin Bloom, founder of the Suncoast Waterkeeper. The facts will show they (the DEP) have been in control of this facility for 20 years. ....

For decades, capitalist industries have produced wastewater by-products without serious plans for how to dispose of them. Their contents are usually toxic, often radioactive and generally hazardous to surrounding communities where they are stored and to the larger environment should they be released accidentally or otherwise.
While there are many thousands of such hazardous sites across the U.S., it is rare that they make the news. Case in point is the reservoir on the former 676-acre Piney Point phosphate mine site near Tampa, Fla. A state of emergency was declared April 3 when the walls of the storage pool, holding water polluted with phosphate and containing radioactive materials radium and uranium, threatened to burst. ....
