BARTOW The Polk County School Board, along with district staff, have a message for voters: “Thank you for renewing the half-cent sales tax in November 2018!” Without the 15-year tax, they say the school district could not afford to build new schools, modernize old ones and do much-needed improvements on others. The initiative passed 68% to 32%. As part of the district’s plan to keep people apprised of what the tax is paying for, on Tuesday, Assistant Superintendent for Facilities and Operations Angela Usher, along with Robert Kincart, founder and president of A-C-T Environmental & Infrastructure and a member of the Sales Tax citizens oversight committee, told the School Board what they have been able to accomplish in the past two years. ....
The CDC recently issued a study on a Mulberry High wrestling tournament that turned into a coronavirus superspreader event and led to one death. Polk County public schools announced a pause in athletics in December, days after a wrestling tournament turned into a superspreader event that was recently cited in a CDC study. On Wednesday, the county announced it would limit attendance at athletic events for the remainder of the school year in an effort to help slow the spread of disease. Currently, attendance at athletic events is capped at 50 percent. Beginning Feb. 1, attendance will be further reduced depending on venue. ....
MULBERRY – Polk County Public Schools now has at least one fatality from COVID-19. Maria Hernandez, 55, a longtime paraprofessional and secretary in Mulberry schools, died from the virus on Thursday, according to family and friends. “We are heartbroken about the loss of Maria,” said Michael Young, principal of Mulberry High School, where Hernandez worked in the guidance office. “She was driven by her passion to help our students and families have better futures. Maria excelled at celebrating student accomplishments and encouraging them to stretch themselves beyond their expectations. Her Instagram handle was ‘Mulberry Momma Bear,’ and it was very fitting for her – she filled in that role for all of our students.” ....
