10 Years later: Rapid City police remember fallen officers' sacrifice

RAPID CITY, S.D. – Rapid City police remembering two officers who made the ultimate sacrifice, saying, “Even now, ten years later, the memory of that day is not any less painful.”
A routine stop off East Anamosa Street turned deadly when a man pulled out a gun and opened fire, striking three Rapid City officers.
Officer Ryan McCandless was 28. He died after being taken to the hospital. Officer Nick Armstrong was 27. He died of his injuries five days later. And Officer Tim Doyle was injured but recovered and remains on the Rapid City force to this day. ....

A very special delivery

SPEARFISH â The twinkling lights of Christmas were joined by the flashing lights of the Spearfish Police Department Thursday as officers from multiple public safety departments joined forces to make one little boyâs holiday a whole lot brighter.
This was just one of 25 such deliveries to kids in grades K-12 selected to receive some extra holiday cheer from the âBadges with Kidsâ program coordinated by local law enforcement.
Spearfish Police Department school resource officers Candi Birk and Jason Gellett coordinated funding with the âBlack Hills Badges for Hopeâ a non-profit group based in Rapid City, along with school counselors and staff to select 25 kids that were in need or deserving of some extra cheer this year. Once that list was determined, officers reached out to the families to see if they would like to have their child participate. ....
