A new malaria vaccine has proven 77 percent effective in trials on infants, British researchers said Friday, in what could prove to be a potential game-changer against the deadly mosquito-borne disease.

A new vaccine against malaria has proven highly effective in trials, raising new hope that one of the world s deadliest diseases could be brought under control. According to the World Health Organization, malaria sickens around 230 million people a year and kills around 400,000, the majority of whom are children under the age of five.
These are very exciting results showing unprecedented efficacy levels from a vaccine that has been well tolerated in our trial programme, said Halidou Tinto, director of the Institute of Research in Health Sciences and the trial s lead investigator, said in a statement put out by Oxford University. ....

650,000 African children given malaria jab: WHO

Two years into a malaria vaccine pilot scheme, more than 650,000 children have been immunised across Kenya, Ghana and Malawi, the World Health Organization said Tuesday.

Global advisory bodies for immunisation and malaria are expected to convene in October to review data on the vaccine and consider whether to recommend using it more widely.
The RTS,S vaccine is the only existing jab shown to reduce malaria in children. It acts against plasmodium falciparum the most deadly malaria parasite globally and the most prevalent in Africa.
Progress against malaria has been stalling for a number of years. ....

Bernot couldn’t see the larvae – at just about half a millimetre long, they are all but invisible – but he could soon feel them: a tingling, itchy sensation as the worm larvae wriggled through his skin and into his bloodstream.
From there, Bernot knew, the hookworms would travel to his lungs. Eventually, they would make their way up from his lungs, slip down his oesophagus, pass through his stomach, attach themselves to the lining of his small intestine, and begin to suck his blood. ....
