The three Maqis personnel had been remanded five days.
JOHOR BARU: Three assistant enforcement officers of the Malaysian Department of Quarantine and Inspection Services (Maqis) in Johor were ordered in remand for five days for alleged corrupt activities in connection with the issue on the meat cartel.
The remand order, from Tuesday until Jan 23, was issued by Johor Baru Court registrar Nur Fathiah Mohd Fedzir following an application by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).
The three officers, aged between 40 and 55, were arrested at the state MACC headquarters at 7pm Monday when they were called to give their statements. ....

Kuala Lumpur: The New Straits Times exposé of the activities of a syndicate, which smuggled in non-certified meat and sold it in Malaysia as halal products, has unearthed more startling revelations.
The frozen meat imported by the cartel from non-certified countries is not limited to beef, but also includes horse meat and kangaroo meat.
These items would, upon arrival in Malaysia, be mixed with beef in warehouses nationwide run by the cartel before being sold to unknowing suppliers.

Sources told the New Straits Times that among the stock they bring in are kangaroo meat, horse meat and beef. However, the beef is from animals of poor quality or even diseased, so it is obtained at much lower prices. ....

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 22   Police today confirmed that frozen meat is being smuggled in several of the country’s state borders.
Without revealing more details, Bukit Aman Internal Security and Public Order Department director Datuk Seri Abd Rahim Jaafar said among the states facing this problem were Kelantan and Sarawak. 
The issue is not a new one, he said, adding that the police were alert and had made arrests.  ....
