THOMAS YONG/The Star THE Johor Elephant Sanctuary (JES) has an important role to play in helping to reduce the number of clashes between humans and elephants in the state. JES, the second elephant sanctuary in Malaysia, doubles up as a tourist attraction for animal lovers to get close to the jumbos. More importantly, it serves as a training ground to train wild elephants to stay away from areas inhabited by humans. Johor Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) director Salman Saaban said the Perhilitan sanctuary in Kota Tinggi, built at a cost of RM15mil, had been operational since December last year. ....

Environmental activist group EcoKnights claimed that Malaysia was not invited to the recent “Leaders Summit on Climate” because of its lack of direction or prioritisation in charting a low-carbon future. EcoKnights president Dr Yasmin Rashid said Malaysia “lacked anything concrete” that it could put forward in the discussion on reducing carbon emissions. ....

JOHOR BARU: The water quality of Sungai Kim Kim in Pasir Gudang here, which is said to be very polluted can still be saved and returned to Class One, says Malaysian Nature Society (MNS) president Prof Dr Ahmad Ismail. He said it would, however, require the state government, through the relevant authorities, to take immediate action to prevent further pollution in the river.
