March 3, 2021 6:05 pm Farmers need the government’s promised new agri-environmental pilot scheme to be a “meaningful scheme – with a base payment of €10,000”, according to the Irish Farmers’ Association (IFA). Commenting on this, IFA president Tim Cullinan said the “REPS pilot results-based scheme” – proposed by the Department of Agriculture, based on the “much-hyped commitment” in the Programme for Government – needs to deliver “real money” to farmers. The president led a delegation including National Rural Development Committee chairman Michael Biggins and National Hill Committee chairman Flor McCarthy to meet Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine Charlie McConalogue about the new scheme this morning (Wednesday, March 3). ....
IFA calls for flexibility on gorse fire deadline dates Updated / Wednesday, 24 Feb 2021 11:50 A gorse fire in Co Sligo The Irish Farmer s Association has called for the extension to the deadline for the burning of scrubland. The deadline is next Monday, March 1. Legislation means that gorse fires will no longer be considered legal practice under the Wildlife Act, but farmers have requested that burning should also take place in March due to the wet weather in January and February. IFA National Hill Farming Chairman Flor McCarthy said the extension by a month is of vital importance as it will address better vegetative management. ....

The Department of Housing Local Government and Heritage has announced that the Minister Darragh O’Brien has no discretion to change these dates. There is provision for some restricted exemptions from the prohibition during the closed period such as for works undertaken in the ordinary course of agriculture or forestry, and for public health and safety reasons. Legislation allows both landowners and public authorities to address hedges for road safety reasons at any time of the year. ....
