Utah Gets Two New State Parks, Including One Named for the Utahraptor

Utah’s more than 40 state parks, from Antelope Island to Goblin Valley, are a testament to the region’s fascinating and diverse landscapes. Now, as
Travel + Leisurereports, the state is adding two more to the mix: Utahraptor State Park and Lost Creek State Park.
The bill, signed into law by Utah governor Spencer Cox in mid-March, didn’t only make the designation official it also allotted $36.5 million for the parks’ renovation and development. Both places are already pretty popular spots. Lost Creek State Park will be located around Lost Creek Reservoir, where people like to fish for rainbow and cutthroat trout. And Utahraptor State Park, near Moab in eastern Utah, is frequented by hikers and campers. ....

29 Forgotten Graves Unearthed at a Black Cemetery Near Tampa Bay

Last year, ground-penetrating radar revealed that a purportedly empty cemetery in Clearwater, Florida, might not actually be empty. To longtime residents of the area, it wasn’t exactly news.
As
Smithsonianreports, the North Greenwood Cemetery opened in 1940 and provided burial plots for members of Clearwater’s Black community until 1954, when the city decided to build a high school and a pool on the land instead. Officials relocated 350 graves several miles north, to Parklawn Memorial Cemetery, but some locals maintained that unmarked graves were never exhumed. Now, researchers from the Florida Public Archaeology Network have teamed up with development company Cardno to excavate any remains that may have been neglected. So far, they’ve unearthed evidence of 29 graves. ....

Game of Thrones' Dire Wolves Existed, But May Not Have Been Wolves

Though most people may know dire wolves from their many scene-stealing appearances in
Game of Thrones, they didn’t spring straight from the mind of George R.R. Martin. In fact, scientists have known about the long-extinct creature since the mid-19th century.
Until recently, it was widely believed that the dire wolf (
Canis dirus) was essentially a more muscular relative of the gray wolf (
Canis lupus), partially because their skeletons look so similar. But a new study published in
Nature suggests that the two species share much less than their appearances imply.
It all started when archaeologist Angela Perri, of Durham University in the UK, set off on an expedition across North America to locate dire wolf fossils from museum collections and see if she could extract DNA from them. Her endeavor was successful: As ....

The U.S. Capitol Building Houses an Empty Crypt for George Washington

USCapitol, Flickr // Public Domain
The U.S. Capitol Crypt is home to 40 Doric columns, a dozen statues, and no human remains. It’s also a lot less far off the beaten track than your regular run-of-the-mill underground vault visitor tours of the Capitol building pass through it on a daily basis.
In fact, the Capitol Crypt wasn’t exactly intended as a crypt. According to Architect of the Capitol, the building’s first architect, Dr. William Thornton, called it a “Grand Vestibule” on a blueprint from 1797. Nine years later, his successor dubbed it the “General Vestibule to all the Offices.” But while the room was mainly meant to function as a thoroughfare, it was also supposed to be the final resting place of George Washington and his wife, Martha. ....
