Little Italian Grandmothers

When I was in the seminary, a New York City priest familiar with the city’s ethnic neighborhoods delivered an unusually memorable homily. He introduced his remarks with a droll comment about “little Italian grandmothers” and their large families. The details escape my memory now. But his quip drew twitters of chuckles from the seminarians. Despite the humorless politically-correct culture, the popular caricature of little Italian grandmothers remains comical.
The priest then spoke about the exalted dignity of the priesthood, the necessity to pray and prepare well as seminarians. We were enthusiastic to hear all about our vocation and eager to consider its noble dignity (perhaps also looking forward to some of the perquisites of office, including comfortable living accommodations, good food, and private bathrooms hey, don’t laugh). ....

Most adults know the frustration of receiving duties but not the authority to carry them out correctly. The relationship between power and responsibility helps us understand ideological tensions in society and the Church.
Jesus founded the Church as a covenant of freedom, authority, and responsibility. He bestows his power on the apostles: “I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” (Mt. 16:19)
But the authority Jesus gives us is inseparable from an urgent responsibility, the salvation of souls: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit….” (Mt. 28:19) Hence, the Catholic faith recognizes the complementarity of Christian authority rooted in truth ....

Nebraska dioceses to end pandemic dispensation from Sunday Mass obligation

Lincoln Journal Star
Nebraska churches have been adapting to social distancing regulations by having online services from buildings void of parishioners.
Catholics in Nebraska will be obligated to go back to in-person Sunday Masses starting in May, the state s three dioceses announced Wednesday.
Diocese of Lincoln Bishop James Conley joined Omaha Archbishop George Lucas and Grand Island Bishop Joseph Hanefeldt in planning to end the dispensation from the Sunday Mass obligation on May 23. The dispensation was put in place last March due to the pandemic.
Conley said Catholics have a grave obligation to return to in-person Masses because the Eucharist is at the heart of what it is to be a Christian. ....

Holy Thursday and the Last Supper provide us with a tender and complicated scene of personal relationships: an admixture of joy, melancholy, and disturbing prospects of denial and betrayal. The Sacred three days the Triduum conclude with the glorious Resurrection. The grand finale of the Easter Season includes the Ascension and Pentecost. But we may wonder why the Ascension of Jesus His departure from the friends He loves and His return to the Father is a glorious mystery of the Rosary rather than one of the most sorrowful mysteries.
Imagine a world without the Ascension, where Jesus continues to walk among us. Immediately after the Resurrection, the Apostles did not ....
