Updated: 8:28 PM EDT May 13, 2021 OHIO, USA Since the CDC updated their recommendations that people who are vaccinated no longer need to wear masks or practice social distancing, organizations have been quickly updating their own COVID-19 policies. On Thursday the Catholic Bishops of Ohio announced their decision to reinstate the general obligation of Catholics to attend mass on Sundays and on Holy Days of Obligation. The change will take effect for all Dioceses in Ohio, including the Diocese of Toledo, on the weekend of June 5-6. On Wednesday, Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine announced that he is lifting all health orders during the first week of June, with the exception of those affecting nursing homes. ....

The Association of U.S. Catholic Priests, which describes itself as “a pastoral voice of compassion, hope and joy in our pilgrim church and world,” has expressed support for the Every Child Deserves a Family Act. According to the Lepanto Institute, a research and education organization dedicated to preserving the traditional teachings of the Catholic Church, the bill “would effectively shut down the adoption services of Catholic Charities by mandating homosexual adoptions as well as potentially adopting children to couples of any belief system, including active satanists.” ....

There are reports of people posing as pastors and contacting members on social media asking for money or gift cards. The diocese says your pastor will never contact you with an emergency request for cash. Any communication to help fulfill a need will come through the parish or diocese s official communication channels, or the need will be accomplished through a collection approved by the diocese. Report any suspicious messages received via text, email or Facebook to your parish immediately. You can also file a report with the Federal Trade Commission. ....

In the wee hours of the morning on Monday, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, an arsonist spray-painted the message, “Jesus is Black” in a Roman Catholic Church in Toledo, Ohio, while setting fire to parts of the church. Police later caught up to the suspect, 27-year-old Christopher A. Harris. Harris shot and killed a police officer in a shootout that also claimed his life. Harris’s Facebook account includes multiple posts with the message, “Jesus is Black,” and one post evoking King’s assassination days before the church arson. ....
