Second Avenger gets FAA Experimental Certificate as UAV plays growing payload-testing role

A second General Atomics Aeronautical Systems Avenger Extended Range (ER) unmanned air vehicle (UAV) has received an Experimental Certificate from the Federal Aviation Administration.
The certificate will allow the company-owned aircraft to operate within the US National Airspace System, the company said on 3 March. The first Avenger ER received an FAA Experimental Certificate in 2016.

The Avenger UAVs have been produced in limited numbers since first flight in 2009. The turbofan-powered unmanned aircraft, also called Predator C, uses avionics based on those in the MQ-9 Reaper. In recent months, General Atomics has announced deals with the US government to use Avengers as testbeds for various autonomy technologies. The manufacturer is also using the aircraft for internal research and development efforts, it says. ....

Cal State Fullerton faculty and staff were awarded more than $9 million in funding during the period October to December 2020. Supported projects range from a transportation fellowship to a prison arts collective to research on manta rays.

General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI) completed the first Beyond Line of Sight (BLOS) High Frequency (HF) Command and Control (C2) demonstration for an Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) using its MQ-9 drone.
The HF C2 capability does not require a Satellite Communications (SATCOM) link and is capable of providing BLOS connectivity up to 8,000 miles, depending on transmit power and link geometry.
For the demo, GA-ASI integrated the U.S. Government’s Collaborative Operations in Denied Environment (CODE) autonomy software into the Open Operational Flight Profile (OFP) of an MQ-9A Block 5 Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA) and flew the MQ-9 using improved diagonal tails with conformal HF antennas incorporated into the leading edges. ....
