Sydney, Feb 6 : Australia batsman Steve Smith beat Pat Cummins by 12 votes to win the Allan Border Medal, the highest honour in Australian men s cricket. This is the third time he is winning the prestigious medal. He was pipped by David Warner by one vote last year. The right-handed batsman made the most runs for Australia across all formats in the voting period with 1,098 at an average of 45.75. The effort was built on four half centuries and four centuries. I was a bit surprised. I don t know, I didn t feel like I had the biggest Test summer, which I think holds the most votes. I think my one-day cricket was pretty good last year, so I obviously got a lot of votes there, said Smith after winning the medal. ....
A questionable tennis umpire Sacha Baron Cohen has unveiled a new alter ego - a tennis umpire who knows little about the sport. The character makes his debut in a new advert for Uber Eats in Australia to mark the ongoing Open championship in Melbourne. The 49-year-old comic - who now lives in Australia with wife Isla Fisher and their three children - donned a blonde wig and a Merv Hughes style handlebar moustache for the role. In a voiceover the advert announces: ‘Harking from Dandenong East comes an umpire of questionable intentions, not bound by rules, regulations or codes - he’s an anomaly in the sporting community’ ....

Some matches were going past 11 o’clock which is unsuitable for young families watching at home – one certainly cannot expect young fans to attend matches if games finish this late. ....

To the long list of reasons why South Africans detest Australians, add a Test series that will not be played as scheduled. Until Monday, it seemed probable that Australia would agree to honour their commitment to play three matches in the country in March and April. On Tuesday (February 2), came confirmation that the venture was off. Or, to resort to the weasel word that was used, postponed . ....
