Calgary-based Suncor looks set to announce a decision to abandon its Terra Nova oilfield offshore eastern Canada on 15 June, in what will be a bitter blow to Newfoundland & Labrador’s upstream sector.
Terra Nova was producing between 2002 and late 2019 when the field’s floating production, storage and offloading vessel was removed from location in readiness for a planned upgrade at a Spanish shipyard before resuming operations back in the Jeanne d’Arc basin.
In 2020, however, Suncor ditched its $500 million Asset Life Extension (ALE) project that aimed to recover an extra 80 million barrels of oil from Terra Nova and extend output to 2031, due to the impacts of Covid-19 and low oil prices. ....

The Northstar oil field is nearing completion and will be the first operational oil field in Alaska. It was discovered by Shell in 1983 and although Shell and Amerada carried out appraisals of the field by drilling five wells, the estimated cost of $1.5 billion prohibited further development. After acquiring the interests in the field in 1995, BP is now in a position to make development of the field economically viable. It is currently owned by Exploration (Alaska) Inc. (98%) and Murphy Oil Co. (2%).
NORTHSTAR OIL FIELD DEVELOPMENT
The field is believed to hold around 176 million barrels of recoverable oil. Extraction should start in late 2001 and have a life of around 15 years, making it a smaller but still significant project. Output is expected to peak at 65,000 barrels per day. ....

PTTEP said it expects to drill another exploration well in Block SK438 in the second quarter of 2021.
Petronas senior vice president of Malaysia Petroleum Management, Mohamed Firouz Asnan said: “The success of Kulintang-1 well marks the second gas discovery within the Balingian province this year. This encouraging result proves further potential of sweet gas in the province, especially in the deeper Oligocene play.
The Sirung discovery from earlier this year, and the new Kulintang-1 find, are near to a production facility that PTTEP inherited as part of its acquisition of Murphy Oil s assets.
PTTEP has an 80% operator interest in SK438 while Petronas has 20%. ....
