Qantas delays resumption of international flights

Qantas has pushed back the restart date for most of its international network after the federal budget revealed Australia’s border will likely remain shut until the middle of next year.
In the latest blow to its overseas flying plans, Australia’s national airline said on Tuesday it would cancel all international flights other than to New Zealand scheduled from October 31 through to December 20.
“We remain optimistic that additional bubbles will open once Australia’s vaccine rollout is complete to countries who, by then, are in a similar position, but it’s difficult to predict which ones at this stage,” a Qantas spokesman said in a statement. ....

The government has spruiked its support of Australia s aviation industry but resisted calls to extend its half-price airfare program in this year s federal budget.
Some 660,000 tickets out of the total 800,000 have already been sold, with Cairns, Hobart, Adelaide and the Gold Coast among the most popular destinations.
There are now 3284 weekly flights along Australia s major domestic routes, about 90 per cent of its pre-COVID activity. At the lowest point of the industry - mid April last year - just 123 planes made it into the air.
The Gold Coast has been one of the most popular destinations with travellers buying half-price tickets. ....

Australia Risks Become a 'Lost Kingdom' of the South Pacific: Tourism Sector

Australia Risks Become a ‘Lost Kingdom’ of the South Pacific: Tourism Sector
The tourism sector of Australia has decried the new Federal Budget for lacking a clear plan to open the international border, making it harder for the tourism and hospitality industries to survive.
“It is vital for the Government to begin a staged opening as soon as possible, given the stimulus measures announced tonight,” John Hart, the Chair of the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said in a statement on Tuesday.
“Businesses need certainty, and this is especially important after state border lockdowns battered the sector in 2020-21. The sector hinges on a firm commitment to international restart, from generating demand to accessing skills.” ....

Tourism leaders have continued their attack on the Budget after being shut out of the Federal Government s spending spree.
With no new measures announced on Tuesday night, Queensland tourism operators remain fearful amid dire predictions that up to a quarter of the state s 40,000 tourism businesses will go broke before the coronavirus pandemic is over.
Tourism and Transport Forum CEO Margy Osmond had lobbied for a new round of JobKeeper-style payments for tourism workers affected by the pandemic but was left disappointed by the lack of new initiatives.
Our tourism industry, the major ongoing economic casualty from COVID with hundreds of thousands of jobs lost so far, has missed out on any major new funding which, put simply, is a recipe for further job losses for our sector, she said. ....

'It's a tragedy': Ongoing game of 'border roulette' tough on tourism

‘It’s a tragedy’: Ongoing game of ‘border roulette’ tough on tourism11/05/2021|2min
Tourism and Transport Forum CEO Margy Osmond has urged the federal government to set out a reopening timeline to give the tourism sector a reprieve from the ongoing border uncertainty.
The call comes after the Tourism and Transport Forum briefed the federal government on a $1.8 billion plan which it claims will help the sector stay afloat for the next 12 months.
Stakeholders in the industry said a funding boost was needed to save about 71,000 jobs and 22,000 businesses, touting the introduction of a wage subsidy scheme.
Ms Osmond said international border closures were a “tragedy” for hospitality and tourist attractions which rely on overseas revenue. ....
