The Day - COVID-19 vaccinations ramping up this weekend at Mohegan Sun site - News from southeastern Connecticut

Mohegan Lt. Gov. Susan Bysiewicz toured Mohegan Sun’s COVID-19 vaccination site Friday, pointing to the Mohegan Tribe’s collaboration with Yale New Haven Health and Lawrence + Memorial Hospital as a prime example of the kind of partnerships that are helping propel the rollout of the vaccines in Connecticut.
The tribe has committed about 20,000 square feet of meeting-room space in its Earth Expo & Convention Center, where YNHH and L+M staffers have been manning scores of vaccination stations since the site opened Feb. 19.
Before Friday, they’d administered some 2,000 vaccinations, a number they expect to more than double by the end of this weekend, L+M officials said. About 350 doses of the Pfizer vaccine were to be given Friday, with 1,000 doses of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine scheduled Saturday and more than 1,000 Pfizer doses Sunday. ....

The Day - UPDATED: For hospitals, Medicare penalties not a key motivator in improving patient safety, advocate says

Lawrence + Memorial Hospital in New London and Westerly Hospital are facing reductions in Medicare payments because of the relatively high rates of complications their patients developed during stays between mid-2017 and mid-2019, which was long before the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Backus Hospital in Norwich faces no such penalty.
All three of the hospitals serving the region will get lower reimbursements for Medicare patients in the current fiscal year based on their patient readmission rates for cases between July 2016 and June 2019.
The penalties, assessed by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, were reported this week by Kaiser Health News, a nonprofit that’s been tracking Medicare’s Hospital-Acquired Condition Reduction Program and its Hospital Readmissions Reduction Program since they were instituted in connection with the Affordable Care Act. ....

The Day - Unshakable symptoms: When vestiges of COVID-19 won't go away - News from southeastern Connecticut

Groton Julie Sanders has been feeling pretty well the last few weeks so well, in fact, that she thinks the feeling is going to last this time.
Almost a year after she contracted COVID-19, the 45-year-old Noank resident is feeling hopeful that the pain and physical damage the disease left in its wake finally have subsided for good. A nearly symptom-free stretch in June that turned out to be all too impermanent is ancient history.
For Sanders, it’s been a long haul, hence her status as a “long-hauler,” the term for COVID-19 survivors who suffer from all kinds of illnesses weeks and months after the disease has left their bodies. Once thought to be anomalies, their ranks are growing. ....
