An Evolving Hospital Quality Star Rating System From CMS

Issues With the Initial CMS Star Ratings
The July 2016 CMS Overall Hospital Quality Star Ratings system combined 64 hospital quality measures from Hospital Compare into “measure groups”: mortality, safety of care, readmission, patient experience, effectiveness of care, timeliness of care, and efficient use of medical imaging. A latent variable modeling approach was applied to weight the measures within each group, and overall scores were calculated. A statistical approach (k-means clustering) sorted hospitals into final ratings ranging from 1 to 5 stars. All eligible hospitals in the country (N = 3591) were measured against each other, including large academic medical centers (n = 228), community hospitals of all sizes (n = 1719), critical access hospitals (n = 544), and even single-specialty hospitals (eg, orthopedic) (n = 79). ....

Adena Regional Medical Center named five-star hospital by CMS
CHILLICOTHE – Adena Regional Medical Center (ARMC) has received the highest overall hospital rating, five-star, given by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). The overall hospital rating is based on data publicly reported on CMS’ consumer-oriented website Hospital Compare. ARMC is among just 35 of Ohio’s 134 rated hospitals to receive a five-star rating.
Hospital Compare provides information on how well hospitals provide recommended care to their patients, becoming one tool consumers can use to compare performance measures from multiple hospitals.

CMS Releases FY 2022 IPPS and LTCH Proposed Rule | Holland & Knight LLP

Highlights
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) on April 27, 2021, released the Fiscal Year (FY) 2022 Medicare Hospital Inpatient Prospective Payment System (IPPS) and Long Term Care Hospital (LTCH) Prospective Payment System (PPS) Proposed Rule, which will affect discharges occurring on or after Oct. 1, 2021.
The Proposed Rule would update the payment policies and annual payment rates for the inpatient payment system, update various quality programs and evaluate New Technology Add-On Payment (NTAP) applications, among other changes.
Comments on the Proposed Rule are due by June 28, 2021, and a final rule is expected by Aug. 1, 2021.
