Nurse of the Year Shannon Philp was so shocked at her win, she almost had nothing to say.
Taking home the title at the 2021 HESTA Australian Nursing and Midwifery Awards, Shannon said she went to the winner’s podium without a speech prepared.
“I was absolutely shocked, I really had to think on the spot when they called my name – whatever I said was just totally off the cuff,” she laughed.
Shannon was nominated for her work with comprehensive cancer care provider Chris O’Brien Lifehouse and the Susan Wakil School of Nursing and Midwifery at the University of Sydney. ....

Winners of the 2021 HESTA Australian Nursing & Midwifery Awards were announced last night in a national celebration of the critical contributions of Australia’s nurses and midwives.
Nurse practitioner Shannon Philp was revealed as the 2021 Nurse of the Year for her leadership and work through the Chris O’Brien Lifehouse to improve care for women with gynaecological cancers, while Bega Garnbirringu Health Service’s Janelle Dillon was awarded Midwife of the Year for creating a safe space for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women of Kalgoorlie, Western Australia to receive pregnancy care.
Ramsay Health Care Australia took out the gong for Outstanding Organisation for their work to improve environmental sustainability across its private hospital facilities, including through cutting down greenhouse gas emissions and single-use plastics. In previous years, the nursing community in the IW NHS Trust has been recognised in the Nursing and Midwifery Awards ceremony.
This year had to be different, but awards sponsor Keith Trigg, of Trigg & Co, visited as many award winners as possible to give out the 2020 awards.
