Diversified conglomerate, ITC Ltd, has supported the Kolkata-based Medica Superspeciality Hospital in setting up a 200-300 bed Covid-19 treatment facility at a state owned stadium.
Coming up at the Kishore Bharati Stadium, the temporary facility will also be used as a vaccination centre.

Covid vaccination: Uncertainty fuels second-jab rush

Several private hospitals in the city stopped offering slots for administering the first dose of a Covid vaccine on Thursday and Friday and some even failed to confirm appointments for the second dose as they are booked to the limit.
Covid vaccination centres are witnessing a sudden rush as many fear they won’t be able to get vaccinated in May.

The Centre has said all private healthcare facilities have to procure vaccines directly from the manufacturers from May.
Private clinical establishments fear they may not get enough doses next month. This uncertainty has led to people queuing up at hospitals for the jab. What has added to the uncertainty, and contributed to the queue, is the health department’s advice to hospitals to give priority to second dose recipients. ....

Medicines for Covid-19 patients in short supply

A crisis of drugs that are needed to treat Covid patients is being felt across hospitals in Calcutta and doctors said the problem, if not resolved soon, could hit patient management.
Shortage of remdesivir, a drug widely used to treat patients with severe symptoms, is worrying hospitals the most. Some other drugs like tocilizumab and doxycycline, too, are in short supply.
Some doctors said Covid has multiple lines of treatment but remdesivir, tocilizumab and doxycycline are widely used to treat the disease.
“We have 20 patients in our hospital now who are requiring remdesivir. Each patient has to be administered six doses of remdesivir, which means we will need 120 doses. But we have only 35 doses,” said Sudipta Mitra, a doctor who is treating Covid patients at Peerless Hospital.  ....

We have asked private hospitals to increase Covid bed count, open satellite facilities: Health secretary

Private hospitals must further increase the Covid bed count as the number of people getting infected is increasing rapidly, senior state government officials told private healthcare units at a meeting on Wednesday.
The hospitals said they would ramp up their Covid bed strength but added that increasing the count beyond a point could be difficult. The demand for non-Covid beds was equally high, officials of the hospitals said.
“We have asked the hospitals to increase the number of Covid beds. We also asked them to open satellite facilities,” health secretary Narayan Swaroop Nigam said.
Officials of the health department pointed out at the meeting that the number of Covid beds in private hospitals across Bengal had come down from 5,000 during the epidemic’s peak last year to 4,000 now.  ....
