My Turn: Ignoring racism and sexism is not the answer On Feb. 19, the Monitor carried a front-page story about a bill currently before the state Legislature that would prohibit the teaching of “divisive” subject matter. Specifically, the bill would prevent young students from learning about the systemic racism and sexism that have historically plagued American society and continue to do so. The bill’s sponsors deny that New Hampshire or the United States are infected by racist or sexist philosophies. History and current events say otherwise. Proponents of House Bill 544 insist that no one is “born into” either an oppressor or oppressed status, which requires that teachers refrain from teaching their students about institutional racism. But that creates pedagogical problems. ....
Letter: Vaccine process a model of efficiency Published: 2/12/2021 12:01:26 AM My wife and I had our first COVID-19 vaccinations yesterday at the Steeplegate Mall in Concord. The process was an exercise in precise planning and execution. We pulled up, presented our licenses, and were directed into what was formerly the auto section of Sears. After a few more questions for verification, we held out our arms to a volunteer nurse who administered the Pfizer vaccine. We just wanted to publicly thank the National Guard members, local police and firefighters, and the medical volunteers who made the experience as painless as possible and a model of efficiency. In a challenging time such as this, seeing and experiencing so much selfless cooperation helps keep the darkness from spreading any further.
