A man spared jail for allegedly breaching a court ban last summer thanks to a family barbecue alibi landed back in police custody on Tuesday. Frederick Dalli, a 38-year-old Marsa resident, was escorted to court and charged with unlawful possession of cocaine, possession of a firearm without a police licence, breaching four bail decrees and relapsing. The man risks forfeiting some €33,000 in bail guarantees. Upon his arraignment, Dalli pleaded not guilty to the charges and was remanded in custody by Magistrate Doreen Clarke. His lawyers, Arthur Azzopardi and Mario Mifsud, made no request for bail at the arraignment stage. Inspector Alfredo Mangion prosecuted. ....

A suspected kidnapper being held in preventative custody tried to contact a witness by calling her from a phone in prison, a court has heard. Maher Elemetni, a 43-year old Libyan national, failed miserably in his alleged attempt to contact the woman via the monitored prison phone system, landing in fresh trouble instead. Elemetni has been held in custody since November, when he another two people allegedly kidnapped a 50-year-old woman, snatching her from her Msida home and taking her to a Bugibba apartment, allegedly holding her hostage while demanding ransom money from her son. The traumatised woman was set free hours later after the police managed to locate her. She was treated for shock while the alleged abductors were arrested and arraigned, then remanded in custody after pleading not guilty as charged. ....
An Adrian Delia supporter, sued for libel by PN MP Jason Azzopardi, said that he had simply exercised his former membership rights when posting “certain questions” on Facebook last summer. “I had asked 13 questions. One of those was directed at the Honorable Jason Azzopardi. As party member at the time, I had a right to ask certain questions,” said Vincent Borg, known as Censu l-iswed, when taking the witness stand this week. He was referring to a series of questions posted on his Facebook page, one of which had implied that Azzopardi used to visit Portomaso “to meet with a working girl.” ....
A man who allegedly torched a prison warder’s car in Qormi in January was remanded in custody after pleading not guilty on Wednesday. Tony Zammit, a 42-year-old Qormi resident, was escorted to court under arrest and charged with having set fire to the Toyota Platz, parked on Triq San Edwardu in the early hours of January 25. Working on CCTV footages retrieved from the area around the crime scene, investigators from the Major Crimes Unit and the district police station managed to identify both vehicle and driver involved in the attack. Those investigations pointed in the direction of the suspect who was subsequently arrested. ....
