From staff reports Marietta City Schools’ teachers are next looking to the district’s board of education for ratification of the tentative union contract. On Friday, the Marietta Education Association voted in the auditorium of Marietta High School to ratify the contract, 108 for, 12 against. According to the Association President J.D. Benson who also serves as the Marietta Middle School choir director, the vote by the association now sends the contract to the district’s leadership. The association has a membership of 158 but required in-person attendance for votes to be counted last week. Renaming The Marietta BOE also did not address last week possible new names for the intermediate grade school to take over the present middle school grounds in the fall, meanwhile reorganization talks continue as teachers are identified for grade levels, and retirements continue alongside position changes and eliminations.

jmancini@newsandsentinel.com MARIETTA The Marietta Education Association and Marietta City Schools Board of Education have reached an agreement on a tentative contract. Terms were not disclosed. The agreement was announced late Tuesday night following a meeting to continue negotiations with assistance from a federal mediator. The previous contract expired June 30, 2020. The association is “proud to say that our union bargaining team reached a tentative agreement with the board,” association spokesperson Lisa Polk said. “We’ve bargained in good faith for several months, often under very challenging circumstances,” Polk said. “We believe though, that the result is an agreement that respects and values all our members, and benefits our students and the community. With this agreement, teachers will be on more equal footing with professionals in neighboring districts, which will help our schools retain and retract the highly qualified professionals our students deserve

jpatterson@mariettatimes.com After eight months without a new contract, Marietta City Schools teachers are expected to vote upon a tentative agreement Friday. But eight months’ delay may not have been negative for either the district or its teachers. “It’s a two-edged sword,” said Marietta Middle School Choir Director J.D. Benson, who since 2013 has also served as president of the Marietta Education Association, the teacher union for the school system. “I’m kind of glad that we waited this long, that we took this process all the way out until now because had we just accepted a deal … in October, well, the financial outlook was very bad.”
