Nine minutes and 29 seconds, under normal circumstances, is easily forgettable. It’s the time we spend on routine activities such as taking a shower, doing the dishes, and walking to the station, our minds often elsewhere and not focusing on the task at hand. But nine minutes and 29 seconds was all it took for George Floyd, an unarmed Black man, to publicly lose his life at the hands of the police.
The injustice of those tragic nine minutes and 29 seconds would ignite a long overdue reckoning around racial justice, equity and inclusion all over the world, even at the height of a global pandemic. All of this was made possible because Darnella Frazier, who was a mere 17 years old at the time, had the foresight, composure and courage to film the horrific event unfolding. THINGHOOD. The show will be on view from May 7 – June 19, 2021 and will present seven new drawings. To make these works, over twenty-five different drawings were created, then cut and systematically reassembled into their finished form.
amanze is currently working with a newly reduced capsule of seven recurring elements that include: swimming pools, ada and audre - who masquerade as swimmers/divers, dancers and pseudo lovers - windows and other architectural references, okada [motorcycle taxis], pigeons in flight and the paper itself. amanze speaks lovingly of each of the elements as individual forms. Now having isolated them from their former cohort, they take on new meaning as  ....

Wa Na Wari announced the six recipients of their inaugural artist residency program for 2021-2022: Adetola Abatan, Amber Flame, AshaAung Helmstetter, Natasha Marin, Joshua Nucci, and Ruth Zekariase will all receive a month-long residency at the Black arts-centered space. Each artist will also get a stipend and a chance to show their new work at an exhibition in the space after the residency is over.
