Drinking milkshakes, eating tacos and getting into shark-infested water – you could be forgiven for not understanding what any of these things have to do with sexual consent.
Yet it’s these topics – dished up as bizarre, evasive metaphors for sex – that feature in the Morrison government’s new “Good Society” consent resources for school students.
The newly launched website is part of the Department of Education’s Respect Matters program, and contains more than 350 videos, digital stories, podcasts and teaching materials. ....

Government removes controversial consent videos featuring sharks and milkshakes following backlash

The federal government has removed two videos from its new online resource about sexual consent and respectful relationships following community and stakeholder backlash.
The suite of videos, digital stories, podcasts and other materials on The Good Society website was launched last week, as part of the government s $7.8 million Respect Matters program.
But the resource has faced significant backlash from rape prevention advocates, women s rights groups and politicians for its simplistic and often confusing messaging around sex and consent.

Australian consent education campaign lambasted for 'bizarre' milkshake video and misinformation | Australian education

Last modified on Mon 19 Apr 2021 05.20 EDT
Rape prevention and sexual education experts have criticised the federal government’s new consent education campaign, accusing it of creating “bizarre” videos and spreading misinformation about sex and consent.
The Good Society website, launched as part of the Department of Education’s Respect Matters program, contains more than 350 videos, digital stories, podcasts and teaching materials to help teach sex and consent to school-age children.
None of the videos aimed at students in years 10-12 use the words sex, rape, or assault. Instead, they employ confusing metaphors. In one video, a girl being scared to swim at the beach because of sharks is supposed to represent her being afraid to have sex because of STDs and pregnancy. In another, a girl smearing her milkshake in her boyfriend’s face has been taken by some to represent sexual assault or rape. ....

The Australian government has been criticised for a new education campaign designed to teach schoolchildren about consent and sexual assault.
The online programme uses metaphors such as eating tacos and smearing milkshake on someone s face to depict disrespect and abuse.
Equality activists have described the videos as bizarre and concerning .
The government has defended the campaign, which it said was created with the help of experts.
These materials will provide additional support to better educate young Australians on these issues and have been designed to complement programmes already being offered by states and territories, Education Minister Alan Tudge said when announcing the campaign last week. ....
