Fort Ben Cultural Campus Project Ahead of Schedule Courtesy Arts for Lawrence The Fort Ben Cultural Campus in Lawrence will soon open to the public. The project includes an addition on the theater, an outdoor plaza and amphitheater, musical swings and the transformation of a historic building into an art gallery. Judy Byron, executive director of Arts for Lawrence, said the COVID-19 pandemic limited the project’s programming, causing the organization to lose more than $120 million in expected revenue. “We closed in August of 2019 to start phase one, the renovation of the theater, and we planned to open on March 20 of last year, and as you can imagine we were not able to reopen,” Byron said. ....
Credit Courtesy Arts Council The Kentucky Arts Council has expanded its annual Arts Day to a weeklong event, and it will all be done virtually due to the pandemic. Traditionally, the event has brought Kentucky artists and arts leaders to the Capitol Rotunda in Frankfort for a celebratory day of performances, demonstrations, and a photo opp with the arts community and lawmakers. But this year, Kentucky Arts Council executive director Chris Cathers said they wanted it to be about more than simply celebrating the arts. “As we began to talk about it as a staff, we kept coming up with workshops and ideas and performances and connections that we can make,” Cathers said. “And we were like, this is more than what we can do in one day.” ....
