A bipartisan group of U.S. House lawmakers is asking the Biden administration to seek the elimination of Vietnam’s tariffs on American pork and address other restrictions as it engages with the Southeast Asian country over currency and trade practices.
U.S. pork producers have failed to gain significant access to pork-loving Vietnam that has seen its domestic pig farms devastated by the African swine fever, increasing the demand for imported pork, according to a letter Wednesday to U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai that was signed by 72 members of Congress, both Republicans and Democrats,
Vietnam represents one of the most significant near-term export market opportunity for U.S. pork. However, the United States faces several unwarranted tariff and non-tariff barriers that prevent U.S. pork producers from supplying his major pork consuming nation which right now is dealing with African swine fever in its domestic herds, says National Pork Producers Council’s President Jen Sorenson, communications director for Iowa Select Farms in West Des Moines, Iowa.
During the NPPC Legislative Action Conference held in mid-April, NPPC members urged action from the U.S. government as lawmakers were urged to sign a letter co-sponsored by Reps. Ron Kind, D-Wis., Darin LaHood, R-Ill., Dusty Johnson, R-S.D., and Jim Costa, D-Calif., to U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai, seeking her support for enhanced Vietnamese market access for U.S. pork.

The National Pork Producers Council (NPPC) is focused on legislation that would expand market access to Vietnam, address an agriculture labor shortage and prevent foreign animal disease (FAD) as its members meet with lawmakers.
NPPC held its Legislative Action Conference this week, where its members met virtually with lawmakers in Washington and, among other things, urged them to sign a letter co-sponsored by Reps. Ron Kind (D-Wisconsin), Darin LaHood (R-Illinois), Dusty Johnson (R-South Dakota) and Jim Costa (D-California) to U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) Katherine Tai, seeking her support for enhanced Vietnamese market access for U.S. pork.
