Contributed by Jessica Haase Ketola It was a hot, humid evening as the Sharks circled the tank, warm-ups delayed by thunder, the racers sharpened their teeth and sunned their fins in anticipation of the meet ahead. Wednesday, July 7 th, just shy of 6:30 p.m. the Lake Monticello Swim Team (LMST) Sharks competed in a home meet against the Glenmore Country Club Tornadoes. Due to COVID-19, this season there have been some adjustments to protocol for safety to get these avid swimmers back in the water after missing the 2020 swim season. The meets have been divided between the younger and older swimmers to reduce the number of people gathering. On this evening, it was the younger group, ages 10 and under, competing in their second meet of the season. Families from both teams gathered poolside, spilling out into the lawn surrounding the Ashlawn Clubhouse. OXNARD, Calif. - A 21-year-old Oxnard woman was killed in a rollover crash on Highway 1 Monday morning. It happened around 5:50 a.m. on Highway 1/Rice Avenue south of Wooley Road in Oxnard. The woman, identified Maria Arroyo of Oxnard, was traveling southbound on the highway when her 1994 Ford Ranger went off the roadway and crashed into a fence and a tree before ending up on its roof. Arroyo was the only person in the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene. According to the California Highway Patrol, she was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. ....

The SDCOE will bestow the annual awards during a virtual 2021 Equity Conference from Tuesday to Friday. Receiving awards are: Cox Communications, Equity Champion, Organization: The company’s Connect2Compete broadband program is a low-cost Internet service for students and families in need. The service includes initial free months, and helps students do virtual learning while schools are closed to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Cox also teamed with SDCOE, Computers 2 Kids San Diego, San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce, and San Diego Councilman Chris Cate, District 6, in the Meet the Need computer drive to put more affordable devices into students’ homes. ....
