In the early 1920s, men would come knocking on the back door of Rebecca Goldberg’s Wilmington, home late into the evenings.
The first was a local painter who stopped by after a long day at work. Later his friends came, and then word spread quietly throughout the town. They all came for the same precious, illicit thing: An alcoholic drink in a world that had gone dry.
Rebecca Goldberg was an immigrant, an entrepreneur, and a survivor. This mother of seven was also an unlikely bootlegger, but like so many others who left difficult circumstances in Europe to come to America, she didn’t flinch in the face of hardship. Ideas, thoughts, and issues about housing for older people keep cycling back. Right now seems to be an intense recycling time, at least in my awareness. In the past weeks, a bunch of questions about housing have shown up in my email and telephone messages.
Queries have run the gamut from a students’ research project to a friend who is looking for a place for her 80-plus-year-old mother.
In the student project, a team from a local university was tasked to create a proposal for a theoretical development to be located in our west-suburban area. The multi-faceted project was to include business, retail, professional offices, residential units, and “senior housing.” The team got stuck on the notion of “senior housing.” ....

I’ve made it to Jan. 29, 2021, which makes me a Vaccine Phase 2er since I am in the 75+ age category.
I, like so many seniors, have been waiting patiently for my turn, clearly understanding that healthcare workers and others who take care of people needed the vaccination first.
After this first sector, other priority groups were residents of nursing homes, assisted living facilities, or other congregate settings. They live in close proximity to each other, are less able to socially distance, and therefore, more likely to spread the virus among themselves. Individuals who live in longer-term housing facilities were, and still are, primarily older. This makes them more apt to get really sick and die. I am somewhat uncomfortable applying the term “they” to this vulnerable group because if it weren’t for the luck of the health-status-draw, the “they” could easily be me. ....
