Gov. Edwards Announces $61.6 Million for 16 Watershed Projects to Reduce Flood Risk

Gov. John Bel Edwards is announcing $61.6 million in federal funding for 16 flood risk reduction projects throughout the state as part of the Watershed Projects Grant Program: Local and Regional – Round 1. The Round 1 funding opportunity is part of the state’s Action Plan to spend $1.2 billion in federal Community Development Block Grant Mitigation funds.
“Last week, heavy rains once again inundated flood-weary communities throughout Louisiana, underscoring our state’s increasing flood risk and urgent need for better flood risk reduction. Today, I’m heartened to announce relief is on the way,” Gov. Edwards said. “Through the Louisiana Watershed Initiative, we are working to fight flooding on a large scale with immediate and long-term solutions. These projects move us in the right direction.” ....

Immaculate Heart of Mary Cemetery in Maringouin remains divided by race

BATON ROUGE – Jessica Tilson spent many Sunday mornings in the early 1980s playing outside with her white friends under the shady oak trees in front of the fleur-de-lis stained glass windows of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Maringouin. But as soon as the church bells rang, they parted.
“When it was time to go into the church, it was time to split up,” Tilson said.  
The church has a main entrance with double doors, but members typically enter through separate doors on the sides of the building – to the left for Black members, to the right for white members. Once inside, Black and white members sit on opposite sides of the sanctuary to worship in front of one altar – even though Tilson said the church abandoned formal segregation in the 1980s. ....

Four residents of Acadiana were appointed this week to the Governor’s Advisory Task Force on Atchafalaya River Basin Restoration and Enhancement.
Jody P. Meche of Henderson, Robert C. “Rudy” Sparks Jr. of Patterson, Christopher J. Tauzin of Breaux Bridge and Raymond M. “Mac” Wade of Morgan City will each have a spot on the advisory task force representing different aspects of the Atchafalaya Basin s residents and businesses.
According to the Governor s Office, the Task Force will elevate critical issues facing the Atchafalaya River Basin and the importance of its holistic management for navigation, flood control, and restoration. It will identify and build support for new and recurring sources of funding to reinvigorate the Basin Floodway System – Louisiana Project as well as identify shared go ....
