Urban Tree Fund re-opens for third phase
The Urban Tree Challenge Fund has re-opened for applications to enable 44,000 large trees to be planted in towns and cities.
The fund has reopened following the success of the first two rounds, Defra and the Forestry Commission said.
The trees will be planted near schools and healthcare centres and in areas with fewer trees and higher social deprivation. These will support areas to improve health and wellbeing and help connect people to the outdoors.
Up to £6m will be available for planting and care for the first three years, with successful applicants needing to match-fund the money they receive.

Towns and cities across the UK will see almost 44,000 trees planted near schools, hospitals and areas of higher social deprivation.
The government has today announced an ‘urban tree challenge fund’ that will make urban spaces greener and will support the country’s net zero drive.
That complements a new ambitious programme, which according to reports will be published in the next two weeks, setting a goal of planting 143 million trees every year by 2035.
The new ambitious programme for trees and woodland is predicted to convert areas of natural beauty into forest.
