The Congress in Tamil Nadu finally overcame the ‘strike rate’ hurdle faced by it in the past Assembly elections (2011 and 2016) by winning or establishing leads in about 16 of 25 seats allotted to it by the DMK (at the time of going for print). The party also retained the Kanniyakumari Lok Sabha seat for which a bypoll was held.
This works out to a success rate of 64%, the highest since 2006 and 2001, when it won over 50% of the seats allotted to it by the DMK and the AIADMK respectively. Coming on the back of tough negotiations with the DMK where the party wanted a ‘respectable’ number of seats, the Congress considered the victory a big step forward for it in the State. In 2011, the party got 63 seats from the DMK but won only five, and in 2016, it won just eight ....

Veteran movie actor and Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) founder Kamal Haasan was today defeated in Tamil Nadu s Coimbatore (South) constituency at the end of counting of the votes polled in the recently-held Assembly election.
The BJP s Vanathi Srinivasan overtook Mr Haasan, who was till then leading, by around 6 pm and ultimately won the election by around 1,500 votes. ....

The DMK is leading in 118 segments, the minimum for a simple majority in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly and its allies in 19, giving the front a comfortable leeway as counting of votes progressed on Sunday for the April 6 assembly elections.
The AIADMK is ahead in 80 seats and together with its partners in 94 constituencies, according to trends made available by the Election Commission for 232 segments till 1 pm.
Victory in 118 of the total 234 constituencies will ensure a simple majority. ....

Race Course residents slam road project | Coimbatore News

Coimbatore: Clad in black shirts, around 100 people walked along Race Course circle on Wednesday early morning to express their displeasure over the model road project being implemented in the locality as part of the Smart City project.
The protesters gathered at Race Course at 6.30am and began walking in the clockwise direction. They were soon joined by a few walkers in plain clothes, cyclists, environmentalists, DMK members from Singanallur, members of Tamil Mandram, Congress candidate from Coimbatore South Mayura Jayakumar and MNM candidate from Singanallur Dr V Mahendran.
There has been a growing clamour against the model road work, which the local residents said involved cutting and uprooting of trees and erecting many steel and concrete structures. The main bone of contention was that the plan was executed without consulting the residents, who said they were not informed about the project. ....
