WorkSafe report identifies steps for improving transport safety
A cross-sector project between WorkSafe NZ and industry representatives has been established to help improve health and safety outcomes across the Transport, Postal and Warehousing sectors.
WorkSafe data also shows that in Transport, Postal, and Warehousing in 2019 there were 57 fatal crashes, 170 serious injuries and 521 minor injuries involving trucks. 147 of these vehicle-related injuries required those involved to spend more than one week away from work.
“These numbers are concerningly high, and it was clear there was some work needed to be done to try and create solutions to reduce vehicle-related risks,” says Ruth Cook, WorkSafe Engagement and Implementation Lead. ....

Without good roads few of the infrastructure goals laid out by the New Zealand Infrastructure Commission will be realised, says Road Transport Forum (RTF) chief executive Nick Leggett.
The RTF has responded to the He Tūāpapa ki te Ora Infrastructure for a Better Future: NZ Infrastructure Commission Strategy Consultation Document stressing the need for roads; electricity generation to match demand; distribution infrastructure to match alternative “fuel” sources; and connectivity throughout New Zealand to support both technology in trucks and communications with customers.
“The conundrum for us is commenting on future infrastructure while the Government downplays roading investment and cancels significant roading projects in favour of funding the Auckland cycle bridge, without any appropriate economic evaluation,” Leggett says. ....

The Government needs a clearer position on transport
decarbonisation and to be more realistic about the societal
impacts while reducing emissions, says Road Transport Forum
(RTF) chief executive Nick Leggett.
While recognising
the considerable work done by Ministry of Transport Te
Manatū Waka (MoT) on Hīkina te Kohupara - Kia mauri ora ai
te iwi Transport Emissions: Pathways to Net Zero by 2050, in
its submission the RTF says the Government’s approach is
confusing, creates uncertainty in the freight sector, and
will increase transport costs, which they should be honest
about.
On one hand the Government tells us the market ....
