Maharashtra orders private schools to cut fees by 15% this year | Mumbai News

MUMBAI: The Maharashtra cabinet on Wednesday decided to issue directives to private schools in the state to reduce fees by 15% in this academic year to ease the financial impact of the Covid pandemic on households. A government notification is expected soon.
School education minister Varsha Gaikwad said guidelines will be issued to schools where parents have already paid fees for the year. For those yet to pay, schools will have to collect 15% less, she said.
The move comes a week after the Supreme Court on July 22 directed the state to consider its May judgment to Rajasthan schools to reduce fees by 15%. ....

In response to the Supreme Court (SC) direction for private-unaided schools to reduce fees by 15 per cent in lieu of unutilised facilities by students due to shift to online education, the Maharashtra English School Trustee Association (MESTA) said schools need fees to survive and sustain. On the other hand, parents of students studying in private-unaided schools have demanded a 50 per cent reduction in fees on account of unutilised facilities during the last academic year 2020-21. ....

Around 300 parents of the students studying in private unaided schools will be staging a protest on February 17 at Azad Maidan against the fees charged during the COVID-19 pandemic. The protest termed Chalo Azad Maidan has been organised by the Forum for Fairness in Education (FFE), a non-governmental organisation, and will witness the participation of parents from different parts of Maharashtra.

There are as many candidates running on Independent ticket for parliamentary and district chairperson seats as the combined number of party flag bearers, official records show.
Our analysis of the Electoral Commission data shows that half of the 2,667 parliamentary contestants are Independents, followed by the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party that has fielded 496 candidates while the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) has 281 flag bearers.
The National Unity Platform (NUP), Uganda’s youngest political party led by presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi, aka Bobi Wine, has raised 242 contenders for parliamentary slots which, constitute half of candidates that the ruling party is sponsoring, fielded.   ....
